How are somatic yoga and somatic movement different ? Simply put :) In somatic yoga we are guided into specific postures where we are invited to feel clearly and deeply the sensations arising within the given postures . We work with the principles of softening, grounding, broadening and lengthening, actions and impacts. In somatic movement we are given a seed of a movement, a thread of gestures woven together from which we can follow sensations into an ever evolving movement pool of our own, where we are invited to explore the principles of yielding, pouring, allowing, reaching and pushing. You cant do this wrong ! And yet people are often shy to move in this way , after one session people are often surprised how much they enjoy it, the experience is often deeply satisfying and nourishing . Inspired by @catherineannisyoga book share for world book day, I felt to join in with my current faves . Little mountains pile up for different topics, this is my movement / trauma pile,I love them all and want to dedicate a bit more time to reading , less dipping ( attention span what happened !) and more whole book experience. The stalking wild Psoas by Liz @psoasknowledge is magical and looking pretty well loved and worn even though not very old . I’ve just finished the trauma sensitive yoga in therapy more as a research read. Wisdom of the body moving I’ve owned literally for decades, it’s funny how things come full circle and I’m currently practicing and studying in authentic movement and BMC .Every-time I pick this up I find something that translates to exploration in my practice . Body fullness coupled with the practice suggestions is a gem and I find a good teaching resource. Life on land by Emilie Conrad the visionary founder of continuum movement is next on my list to read in its entirety. Im not quiet sure how this book escaped me it’s a “wish I owned it sooner “ book . I recently removed fb and a few other apps from my phone and I’m definitely turning to my books more ! With the promise of spring my practice has begun to shift from the much needed nourishing restorative and reflective practices of winter (and lockdown!) into a gentle bouncy and energising feeling pool For me this is one of the joys of somatic practice, the ever changing form and rhythm in direct response to the inner and outer changing seasons and needs, and yet the invitation to come to a place of direct experience is constant. It’s a practice where we can drop our urges to learn, to succeed, to gather knowledge, to hustle, to fix, to fit and instead soften and move, jiggle a bit, stay a bit, move and soften some more, listen with curiosity, landing into the felt sense of the body to experience the pleasure (even if just for a fleeting moment) of intimate being. I get asked what is Way of soma as if it’s potentially a new thing. Way of soma is simply home for a body of somatic practices that stem from the rich lineages of yoga, somatic awareness and movement. It is not a new methodology or school. Every class, workshop and course has perhaps different threads woven through, I am forever curious, nothing is static, or linear, learning is constant but essentially we are exploring practices that have strong roots that gift us with structure and freedom to explore in equal measure, practice becomes a an ever expanding unique personal journey.
